No one had ever asked me that. Not my mother. Not even my gynecologist. As if women like me — married, middle-class, educated — weren’t supposed to think about such things, let alone talk about them.
Still, I answered.
“It’s… okay, I guess. He does what he has to. We used to… do it once or twice a week. Now it’s more like once every two months. He just… finishes and goes to sleep. I thought that was normal.”
For a moment, Megha was silent. Then she burst out laughing — not cruelly, but with a kind of shock.
“What?” I asked, slightly offended.
She shook her head, holding her stomach. “Oh God, Sabita… no wonder you’re always looking like someone stole your last piece of chocolate!”
I frowned. “Why are you laughing?”
She leaned forward, her expression turning serious. “Because, my dear, what you just described isn't sex. It’s… maintenance work. Like starting a machine once in a while to make sure it doesn’t rust.”
That made me pause.
I looked down into my coffee, suddenly feeling… exposed. Like I had been living in a house without windows, and someone had just opened the blinds.
Megha saw the look on my face and softened her voice. “Sabita… did you ever… you know… reach orgasm?”
I blinked again. “Orgasm?”
She sighed. “Oh god. You’ve never even watched porn, have you?”
I shook my head slowly. “No… never. I never felt the need.”
Megha smiled gently. “Then maybe… it’s time you start exploring what you’ve been missing.”
That night, I couldn’t sleep.
Ravi lay beside me, snoring softly, turned away like always. I stared at the ceiling, Megha’s words echoing in my mind like a haunting tune.
Had I really been missing out on something?
Was there a world beyond the mechanical motions I had mistaken for intimacy?
The next day, curiosity got the better of me. When Ravi left for work, and the house was quiet, I pulled out my laptop and typed in something I’d never typed before.
“How to know if you're sexually satisfied?”
That search led to another. Then another. And eventually, to videos I had never imagined watching — not because I was ashamed, but because I had never known desire as something independent of love or duty.
At first, I was embarrassed — I closed the tab three times in fifteen minutes. But the fourth time, I let it play.
And I watched.
Not just the bodies — but the expressions, the moans, the way the women arched in pleasure, how their partners touched them, listened to them. I felt something stir inside me — not shame, not guilt… but hunger.
And suddenly, it all made sense.
Ravi had never asked me what I liked. He never kissed me like the men in those videos did. Never lingered. Never explored. He entered, thrust a few times, finished, rolled over, and fell asleep.
And I — poor naïve Sabita — thought that was sex.
No wonder my body had forgotten what pleasure even felt like.
That night, something changed.
Not between Ravi and me — but within me.
After he turned his back and began his routine slumber, I stayed awake. My fingers trembled as I slipped them beneath my nightgown, exploring myself slowly. The way I saw in those videos. The way Megha had hinted.
And for the first time… I felt something. A heat, a tension, a release — that washed over me like a wave crashing against a dam that had held for years.
I gasped, my mouth open, heart pounding. The pleasure was raw, unfiltered, and so unlike anything I had experienced before. It made me realize what I had been missing for years. Not just sexually… but emotionally.
I had never owned my body before.
In the following days, a new restlessness took root.
I found myself noticing things — the way my saree hugged my hips, the softness of my inner thighs, the way men looked at me when I walked past. I wasn’t looking for validation. I was feeling again — alive, awake, and aware.
But along with that came a deeper conflict.
I couldn’t get pregnant without having sex with Ravi. But how could I desire a man who never made me feel desired? Who used my body like a tool for lineage, not love?
Yet I knew him. I knew how rigid his thinking was — the kind of man who would be offended by the idea of his wife pleasuring herself, let alone watching erotic content. In his eyes, a good wife was a silent wife. A patient one. A pure one.
Telling him the truth would only push him further away.
So I said nothing.
But my mind raced every night, lying beside him like a stranger. My body craved more. My heart wanted something deeper. I wasn’t just seeking sex — I wanted intimacy. Connection. Respect.
One morning, while standing before the mirror adjusting my blouse, I caught my own gaze.
I didn’t look broken.
I looked… dangerous.
Not because I was betraying anyone — but because I had discovered a secret. That I didn’t need someone else to complete me. That I could feel alive on my own. That I could desire, crave, and burn… without guilt.
And that realization, while liberating, also scared me.
Because once a woman starts knowing her worth — sexually and emotionally — the world around her begins to shift. People start noticing. Some admire it. Some fear it.
And some — like Ravi — deny it.
I started keeping a diary.
Not for the usual entries about daily chores or college notes.
But for feelings.
Sometimes I wrote about the way my body felt after those secret moments at night. Sometimes I wrote letters — unsent — to Ravi, begging him to see me, to want me. Sometimes I wrote fantasies — ones I didn’t even know I had.
Each word bled emotion.
Each page carried the weight of years of suppression.
And slowly, the woman who once thought of herself as just a wife, just a daughter-in-law, just a failed womb… began to emerge as something else.
A woman of longing.
A woman of passion.
A woman of choice.
Now, each night when I lay beside my husband, I was no longer that naïve girl who thought sex was just a duty.
I was woken up by a woman awakened.
But also a woman torn.
Because I knew — something had to change.
I couldn’t live forever in the shadows. I couldn’t keep faking moans or avoiding his touch out of frustration. I needed something more.
But what?
A confrontation?
A conversation?
A betrayal?
Or… a rebirth?
I didn’t have the answers yet.
But one thing was certain.
Desire had knocked at my door.
